From the introduction:

The medicinal uses of 45 native plants that grow within the southern Appalachian region are the focus of this book. Although all these plants are found growing within the region, their range is not limited to this area. Because three distinct plant populations overlap here, some of the book's plants may be found as far  north as Nova Scotia, west to Kansas, and throughout the Southeast. For example, black cohosh and blue cohosh are found in woodlands of the northern Appalachians. Passionflower and wild yam species are also found in tropical climates from the Gulf Coast of North America into Central America. Finally, there is a diverse group of endemic southern Appalachian plants, such as yellow root.

Review

“An elegant introduction to the incredible botany found in medicinal plants of the region….presented in an upfront, clear-as-a-bell style that not only educates but also entertains.”
-Peter Loewer, author of The Wild Gardener and Jefferson’s Garden

‘This is an excellent, much needed resource on Southeastern herbs. Well thought out and easy to follow.’
-Tim Blakely, co-author of The Bootstrap Guide to Medicinal Herbs in the Garden, Field and Marketplace

‘This is one volume that I want to own as we enter the post-corporate age: a priceless guide to Southern plant alchemy. These pages are as rich as the cove forests they honor. Even to peruse Howell's manual is healing, and exhilarating, not only because of the book's inherent beauty, but because it contains vital knowledge all of us will need as fossil fuels dwindle and we return to the local. One day this book may save your life.’--Janisse Ray, author of Ecology of a Cracker Childhood;Wild Card Quilt; and Pinhook: Finding Wholeness in a Fragmented Land

“A delightful guide to the most important medicinal plants in eastern North American forests.”

Kelly Kindscher Ph.D., author of Medicinal Wild Plants of the Prairie
